The Rackonomics of Air vs Liquid Cooling

Liquid Cooling sees more activity and press coverage these days, but in the enterprise and colocation communities it retains the reputation of a niche solution for specialized computing segments like HPC and supercomputing. Part of the issue is the fear of water "Data Center Hydrophobia," while the other is the perception of higher CapEx and Opex costs associated with the technology.

Hyperscalers already utilize liquid cooling, in order to deploy the latest generation of ever more powerful processors (such as Google's Liquid Cooled TPU processors), as well as for overall energy efficiency and reduced cooling costs.

Will this be the year that breaks the liquid cooling logjam for conventional servers? That is yet to be seen, but if there is anything that drives most critical facilities to adopt new technology, it's the flow of money. This presentation will examine the various types of liquid cooling systems and the Rackonomics of air versus liquid cooling.
