The types of energy use optimization strategies for data centers will vary based on specifics of the program. Regardless, there is a common thread that connects all data centers – the cooling and IT systems. Comprised largely of servers, storage and network equipment, the IT systems are selected on their ability to meet the stated mission. And whether private or public sector, for-profit or research-based, there are many measures that can be taken to leverage the synergistic relationship between the cooling systems at the micro-level (servers and other IT equipment) and at the macro-level (data center cooling systems) to reduce energy use.
