Backup Power: New Approaches via UPS, Energy Storage and EV Technologies

Start Time: 9/24/2019 10:15:00 AM
End Time: 9/24/2019 11:15:00 AM

Diesel- and gas-fired generators and automatic switchgear have provided long-term backup power to critical facilities for decades, but a quantum leap forward is about to occur, thanks to the advent of large-scale utility, commercial and residential energy storage, plug-in electric vehicles and the application of standard UPS for peak-demand cost management. What do these breakthroughs have in common? Lithium-ion batteries lead the charge, but it goes beyond that. This talk will highlight vast improvements in the cost and performance of rectifier/chargers, inverters, high-speed power switching and control systems, and project where they’re heading. Will a single system soon replace conventional standby generators and UPS systems? We'll talk about it.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand increasing noise, fuel storage and emissions challenges with standby engine generators
2. Learn where the energy storage, UPS and electric vehicle industries are heading, and how this technology can apply to critical facility backup power
3. Plan and prepare for different approaches to improve power reliability while lowering costs and reducing fossil fuel dependence
4. Get an overview of today’s available backup power technology and future technology
